Disclaimer Script

When you are providing a link to any web site that isn't being hosted under the ocbsa.org domain you are encouraged to use the following script to format the link. The script isn't necessary when you link to an official BSA site, such as the National Site (www.scouting.org) or any local council. It's also not necessary when linking to any site is owned by National such as: http://www.scouting.org/media/othersites.aspx

The purpose behind the script is to provide a disclaimer that is displayed prior to executing the link. The visitor is given a choice of continuing on or returning to the previous page.

Let's say you wanted to provide a link to the your charter partner's site.

For example purposes I'll use the site for Google (www.google.com).

Your link would look like this;

http://script.ocbsa.org/cgi-bin/disclaimer.pl?url=http://www.google.com

The same URL in HTML format would be: <a href="http://script.ocbsa.org/cgi-bin/disclaimer.pl?url=http://www.google.com">Link to Google</a>

When your visitor clicks on the link they are shown a short disclaimer statement. They can choose to continue or else return to the previous page. Note: In order to return to the previous page a new page/window must be opened. You must format the script to open a new window (target=_blank).

The syntax of the script command must be exact. Please enter all characters in lower case.

IMPORTANT: The "http://" must be included with the URL that you're linking to. If this is left off, the script will NOT work.

WARNING: Please note that the use of this script does not permit any deviation in what sites you may link to. Policy still prohibits the linking to advancement, meritbadge, training, etc, sites if the purpose is to provide "official" information. Links for these purposes must be directed to an official BSA site such as the National BSA site or any local council. If you're not sure, please fill out the problem report and ask. We run periodic scans of all sites and illegal links will result in the site being closed.
